OPM Bands

We survived the 90s by listening to music especially bands. We almost always wanted to be in a band and cover the songs of our favorite bands.

And for this article, we pay homage to the other OPM bands. We already featured several bands like Eraserheads, Wolfgang, Razorback, The Breed, Mutiny, The Youth, Teeth, Introvoyz, The Wuds, The Jerks and Juan Dela Cruz band and others. Let's have some more!

Led by Wency Cornejo on vocals and Chuck Isidro on guitars, the band was formed in 1986. They are best known for the songs like Habang May Buhay, Next In Line and Tag Ulan. They won almost all the awards they were nominated to including the Artist Of The Year for the 1994 NU Rock Awards.

The Dawn

The band has been formed in 1985 by the late Teddy Diaz and then later on formed by Jett Pangan, Francis Reyes and JB Leonor. Their music is often used for several beer commercials in the 80s and 90s. They were known to be longest lived and most prolific band in the Philippines after they disbanded in 1995.

P.O.T.

Led by the late brother Karl Roy, P.O.T. is a funky rock band. They were famous when they revived the song Yugyugan Na by The Advisors. My favorite songs of the band are Piece Of This and Panaginip. P.O.T. also won several awards including Best New Artist in the 1997 NU Rock Awards.

Radioactive Sago Project

A jazz rock band led by Lourd De Veyra that was formed in 1997. My favorite songs from the band are Gusto Ko Ng Baboy, Astro and Gin Pomelo among others. The band won the Rock Video of the year for the song Astro in the 2004 NU Rock Awards.

Bamboo

Before he went solo, Bamboo lead the band with Nathan Azarcon, Ira Cruz and Vic Mercado. They were know for the songs like Hallelujah, Noypi and Tatsulok among others. The band won several awards in the 2004 NU Rock Awards including Artist Of The Year and Listener's Choice.

Rivermaya

Formed in 1994, Rico Blanco has lead this band to stardom. They were famous for the songs Awit Ng Kabataan, Ulan and You'll Be Safe Here among others. They won several awards from several award giving bodies. But the NU Rock Awards were too tight to the band for them to win a major award.

Kamikazee

Lead by Jay Contreras, the band was formed in 2000. This punk rock band gave us the songs Narda, Chicksilog and Huling Sayaw. They were also awarded Band Of The Year and Listeners' Choice in the 2006 NU Rock Awards.

Alamid

Formerly known as Athena's Curse, Alamid was formed in 1993. Lead by the late Gary Ignacio, the band made popular songs like Your Love, China Eyes and Sama Sama. The only award they won is for the song Your Love as Song Of The Year in the 1994 NU Rock Awards.

Parokya Ni Edgar

Formed in 1993, the band is composed of Chito Miranda, Gab Chee Kee, Buwi Meneses, Darius Semana, Dindin Moreno and Vinci Montaner. They were first known to make parodies of some songs like Trip(Creep by Radiohead), Alimango(Animal by Pearl Jam) and The Ordertaker(Chop Suey and Toxicity by System Of A Down). But of course, they have their originals like Buloy, Inuman Na and Silvertoes. The band won several awards like the Artist Of The Year in the 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005 NU Rock Awards among others.

I miss these kinds of bands play live. Well, as you age, you just want to listen to them through your music player. Hopefully, I can feature them in The 9MM The Podcast.
